The Whale first look: Brendan Fraser plays a recluse affected by obesity: This marks the beginning of the Brendan Fraser revival, sometimes known as the Brenaissance.
The first image of the actor to be shown in Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming thriller The Whale was made public on Tuesday by the distribution company A24. The story revolves around Charlie (Fraser), a solitary English teacher who suffers from an eating disorder called compulsive eating. He tries to reunite with his estranged teenage daughter, Elle, but they haven’t spoken in years (Stranger Things breakout Sadie Sink).
Hong Chau, Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins are set to feature in the film, which is an adaptation of the famous 2012 play of the same name written by Samuel D. Hunter, who was awarded the MacArthur Foundation’s MacArthur Fellowship. The Whale, which will feature Jennifer Lawrence and is Darren Aronofsky’s first directorial effort since 2017’s Mother!, is scheduled to have its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival.
In a prior interview with Deadline, Hunter stated that “converting my play into a screenplay has been a tremendous labor of love for me.” “This is a story that is very close to my heart, and I am so grateful that it will have the opportunity to be shared with a wider audience. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw Requiem for a Dream when I was a freshman in college writing my first plays, and I’m so grateful that he’s bringing his singular talent and vision to this film. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw Requiem for a Dream when I was a freshman in college writing my first plays.”
The previous year, Fraser commented on the upcoming movie by telling Unilad, “It’s going to be like something you haven’t seen before.” “That is, in all honesty, the only thing I can say to you. Both the outfit and the costume were substantial, well-fitting, and hefty. This is in no way comparable to anything else I’ve ever done, yet without trying to be evasive… I have no doubt that it will leave a mark that is difficult to forget.”
The last time we saw Fraser, he was playing Cliff Steele on Doom Patrol, as well as Cliff’s alter ego, Robotman. Although he appeared in Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move as a supporting actor the previous year, the actor will be making his debut as a starring man in The Whale for the first time since the direct-to-DVD release of Breakout in 2013. And this is just the beginning of the Brenaissance: he will also be appearing in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and in DC Comics’ Batgirl as the villain Garfield Lynns/Firefly in the near future.
There is currently no release date set for The Whale in theatres.
