Larry Elder was born on April 27th, 1952 in the city of Los Angeles, which is located in the state of California, United States. His formative years were spent in the Pico-Union and South Central neighborhoods of Los Angeles, California.

Randolph, Elder’s father, was a member of the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II in the rank of sergeant. During the second Great Migration, his family moved westward, settling in the state of California.

In 2011, Larry’s father passed away, and after that, his mother, Viola, together with his two brothers, were mostly responsible for raising him. During World War II, his mother worked as a clerk for the United States Department of War in Washington, D.C.

He attended Crenshaw High School for his education and received his diploma there in the year 1970.
