The show’s creators wanted to include comic books, cinema, and science fiction/fantasy literature. After one more name change (San Diego’s West Coast Comic Convention in 1972), the show became the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) in 1973 with its fourth annual event. The non-profit event became Comic-Con International: San Diego (CCI) in 1995.

The 1970s performance was based at downtown San Diego’s El Cortez Hotel. Comic-Con moved to CPAC in 1979 and remained there until 1991 the new San Diego Convention Center opened. Comic-Con has been there for almost 20 years.

The event has expanded to local hotels and parks due to attendance reaching 130,000 in a convention center that has reached capacity. Programming events, games, anime, the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, and the Eisner Awards occur outside the Convention Center, giving downtown San Diego a campus-like air.

Comic-Con has become the comics convention hub. The event continues to offer the whole convention experience: a giant Exhibit Hall (over 460,000 square feet in its current incarnation), a massive programming schedule (close to 700 events in 2014) featuring comics and all aspects of the popular arts, including hands-on workshops and educational and academic programming like the Comics Arts Conference; anime and film screenings (including a film festival); games; the Will Eisner Comic In; and the Will Eisner.

Comic-Con has hosted thousands of special guests, including comics creators, science fiction and fantasy authors, film and television directors, producers, writers, and creators from all areas of the popular arts, for fun and candid discussions of various art forms. The Exhibit Hall has hosted a wide range of comics and book publishers. Comic-Con International has exhibited comic books and comic art to a growing audience for four-and-a-half decades. As the world’s leading comic book and popular arts conference enters its second half-century, that passion for comics guides it.

Comic-Con International (July 21–24) has grown from a 1970 gathering of comic book and science fiction fans in the basement of the U.S. Grant Hotel to a mega event that has outgrown the 2.6 million-square-foot San Diego Convention Center. 

The city’s largest annual conference invites thousands of out-of-towners to Downtown San Diego to dine, sleep, attend events, and move around. Since 1970, Comic-Con Since then, Comic-Con has become the world’s leading pop culture convention. Educational Programming is its annual focus: panels, seminars, graphic novel clubs, teacher and librarian conferences, and more.

World-Class Events. We host two huge educational-entertainment events each year in San Diego (Comic-Con) and Anaheim (WonderCon). We held approximately 2,000 workshops, talks, costuming competitions, art displays, and more at our 50th convention in 2019.

Arts promotion. Comic-Con promotes popular arts to inspire creativity, inventiveness, and innovation. The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, Comic-Con Independent Film Festival, Artists’ Alley (showcasing convention artists’ original works), and Artist Portfolio Reviews (where emerging artists are partnered with experts for career counseling) are examples.

Community collaboration. Comic-Con prioritizes giving. Blood drives, charitable donations, and training of over 6,000 event volunteers enhance our community with critical stakeholders.

How does Comic Con International affect San Diego’s economy?

San Diego’s most significant event is Comic Con. This event makes San Diego famous. Comic-Con had 135,000 registered fans and 2,500 media members from over 30 nations before the pandemic. Over $165 million was spent in San Diego, including $90 million by attendees. The average visitor spends roughly $700. Comic-Con generates more hotel and sales tax money than the following four to five conferences, benefiting San Diego. 

Since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, San Diego conventions have returned, although not to pre-pandemic levels. At total capacity, 60 downtown hotels will provide approximately 14,000 hotel rooms and over 60,000 hotel nights. 

Comic Con’s free satellite events throughout San Diego County assist the city and county. San Diego gets day-trippers from Nevada, Arizona, and Los Angeles. Comic-Con billboards, bus wraps, and building murals help local marketers. The Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park will attract conventioneers.

Since 2019, San Diego will host Comic Con. How would this gap have affected the event and attendees? The 2020 and summer 2021 events were free and virtual. Comic-Con postponed its summer 2021 live event due to another COVID-19 pandemic and new limitations. Comic-Con hosted a minor in-person event on November 26–28, 2021. The Comic-Con Museum’s soft launch coincided with the event’s smaller attendance. Streaming media giants like Netflix, which is increasing its content and attempting to entice new consumers, attended the scaled-down event. Many Comic-Con attendees are influencers who can boost new show ratings.

Average Comic Con attendees? Where will people spend time/money at the event?

Comic-Con attendees vary. Comics, Star Trek, and Star Wars fans come from many backgrounds. The main exposition hall hosts significant movie studios and tiny comic book publishers. 

Attendees will visit Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, and local beaches as tourists. Kids can visit Legoland or Disneyland, Universal Studios, or Los Angeles on a day excursion. The Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego will benefit most from Comic Con. 

San Diego hosts Comic Con through 2024. Should the convention move after that? 

The Comic-Con Museum is committed to San Diego, where it was founded. Los Angeles and Orange County will campaign hard to renew the convention in 2024. Comic Con’s undersized convention center harms San Diego. Satellite events are popular, but hosting more than 135,000 people may boost attendance. Moving to Las Vegas would add showbiz glamour while moving to LA would make it simpler for celebrities to attend. Comic-Con and the city banked on voters approving the convention center expansion project, which failed by a small margin. Comic-Con would have chosen San Diego had Proposition C succeeded. 

Comic-Con may have to leave San Diego to pursue its interests. Comic-Con hopes to reveal the 2025 convention location by next summer. San Diego still wins, but a convention center expansion agreement is needed. The city faces challenges.
