FG plans to ban Ponmo, saying it’s unhealthy for Nigerians. Going even further, he stated that people should discontinue the practice of eating animal skin because it has no nutritional value and should be halted in order to save the industry and promote the economy of the nation. He made the following statement:
“To the best of my knowledge, Nigerians are the only people in the world that overvalue skin as food, after all, Ponmo has no nutritional value. ” He went on to say that the consumption of animal skin was to blame for the current vegetative state that tanneries are in throughout Nigeria.
As the administration of Rivers State makes the finding, a shipment of ponmo that is not up to grade arrives in Nigeria. In the meantime, Legit. ng claimed that Nigerians are at the mercy of money-hungry businesspeople with criminal motivations who are determined to make money by any means necessary.
This is the case of several people who were arrested after they were found to be in possession of a truckload of suspected substandard animal skin, which is commonly referred to as ponmo.
In Onne, which is located in the Eleme local government region of the state of Rivers, the subpar ponmo was discovered and seized by the state government. While addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, Dr. Fred Kpakol, who serves as the commissioner for agriculture, provided confirmation of the occurrence.
His account suggests that people from Madagascar brought the ponmo to this country. According to him, the truck has been transported to the police area command in Eleme for additional examination. In the Lagos market, the constantly increasing pricing of commodities has become the new standard.
In the meantime, the cost of food in the Lagos market keeps climbing in response to the most current inflation rate. Since the country began closing its land borders in 2019, the country’s inflation rate has been steadily climbing higher.
The situation, on the other hand, has become direr as a result of the global coronavirus epidemic, which had an impact on the economy, and in more recent times, as a result of security concerns within the country. Because of this, there are no problems with food security in a number of states across the country.
Inflation has been on the rise recently, despite the fact that the nation has not yet fully recovered from the devastating effects of the coronavirus pandemic. This is due to the rising rate of insecurity. To this point, the effect has been a struggling economy, a rise in the cost of food, a decrease in the availability of commodities on the market, and an increase in the rate of unemployment. According to the merchants, this problem has resulted in a major decrease in the spending power of customers.
