Samsung’s recent Unpacked event focused more on showcasing the capabilities of Galaxy AI than unveiling the Galaxy S24 series. The company strategically placed the introduction of the smartphone lineup almost halfway into the event, emphasizing the importance of Galaxy AI features. This intentional spotlight on AI reflects Samsung’s desire for viewers to prioritize and appreciate the innovative AI functionalities embedded in the new devices.

Galaxy AI offers a range of features, including real-time translation during voice calls, live language translation with Interpreter mode, and writing style suggestions in the Samsung Keyboard. These capabilities leverage both Google’s AI models and Samsung’s proprietary training. Additional features involve Google’s Circle to Search, summarization in native apps, voice-to-text transcription, wallpaper generation, and more.

The camera app also boasts AI enhancements, facilitating easier photo editing and corrections. Galaxy AI can rectify crooked images, erase objects, and manipulate the position, size, and angle of elements within a photo. Notably, it introduces the ability to transform any video into slow motion, a feature previously limited to specific devices.

However, there’s a catch. While these AI features come bundled with the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung has announced that starting in 2026, users may have to pay for continued access to Galaxy AI features. Until the end of 2025, these functionalities will be available for free, with potential variations for features provided by external parties like Google.

Critics argue that charging users for Galaxy AI post-2025 is counterproductive, especially given the limited practicality of these features. The concern is that users may not find these functionalities essential in their daily lives, potentially making the subscription fee unappealing. This move could also alienate customers, especially when considering the premium price tag of Samsung’s flagship devices.

The debate extends to the perceived value for money, with users questioning why they would be charged for AI features while essential accessories like chargers and earbuds are no longer included. This shift in strategy might prompt consumers, particularly in price-conscious markets, to explore alternative Android brands.

The decision to charge for Galaxy AI raises eyebrows, particularly when compared to competitors who may offer similar features without additional costs. Samsung may face increased scrutiny if other industry giants, such as Apple, provide comparable AI functionalities without imposing subscription fees. As the tech landscape evolves, Samsung’s pricing strategy for AI features could significantly impact its market position and consumer loyalty.
