Antonio Tajani, the foreign minister of Italy, reiterated on Wednesday that a cease-fire in the Palestinian enclave was long overdue and urged Israel to end its military activities there.

Italy supported Israel’s operations after Hamas attacked its southern areas on October 7, but it has since backed less in light of the thousands of civilian casualties.

Tajani emphasized that the “barbaric” attack by Hamas was what started the Gaza War in an interview with the daily La Stampa.

“However, a cease-fire is now necessary,” he continued. Israel needs to halt its military actions, which are severely affecting the Palestinian people.”

The interview was done before the Group of Seven wealthy nations’ foreign ministers gathering, which Tajani will host on the Italian island of Capri. The G7’s alternating chairmanship is currently held by Italy.
