What will Hollywood’s A-listers do about the Golden Globes in the wake of the controversy?

What will Hollywood’s A-listers do about the Golden Globes in the wake of the controversy? It remains to be seen how many nominated actors and actresses will show up at the Golden Globes later tonight in Los Angeles.

After a contentious two years, the ceremony’s organizers seek to redeem both the Globes and themselves.

In 2021, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) faced accusations of unethical behavior and a lack of diversity.

Even while many actors have spoken out against the Golden Globes, those who have won there know the awards momentum it can bring.

Following a series of damning allegations, the HFPA has announced a range of adjustments to rebuild faith. After having a smaller, non-televised ceremony in 2022, organizers hope to come back this year.

In 2023, the most nominated movies and television shows were The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once, followed by Babylon and The Fabelmans.

The backlash from Hollywood.

In February 2021, the LA Times published a devastating exposé of the HFPA, revealing that none of the 87 voting members were people of color and that only a few worked full-time for important foreign magazines. This caused a considerable backlash in Hollywood.

Reporters for the publication also claimed the organization had a pattern of accepting “freebies” from studios and PR firms lobbying for nominations.

Because of the exposé, NBC decided not to air the 2022 ceremony, therefore, it took place off-camera with no notable guests.

Meanwhile, the HFPA has announced several changes, such as increasing the number of members and increasing the diversity of those members and ending the practice of taking promotional materials from movie and television studios.

Tuesday night’s Beverly Hilton hotel ceremony will reveal whether Hollywood has finally forgiven the Globes.

Billboards across Los Angeles announce, “Hollywood’s biggest celebration is back,” and television commercials have aired in the lead-up to the Globes. But that’s assuming anyone from Hollywood even bothers to show up.

Which celebrities will (and will not) be there?

Four famous people, including Quentin Tarantino (the film’s director), Billy Porter (an actor), Jamie Lee Curtis (an actress), and Ana de Armas (a producer), have confirmed their attendance.

The latter two also compete for awards: de Armas for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Blonde and Curtis for best supporting actress for her work in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.

The HFPA is counting on revealing these A-listers in advance will get more people interested enough to attend.

A few, however, will be conspicuously absent. Nominee for best actor in The Whale Brendan Fraser has said that he will not be attending the ceremony after accusing former HFPA president Philip Berk of grabbing him in 2003.

The HFPA concluded that Mr. Berk “inappropriately touched” Fraser, but his actions should have been seen as a joke rather than a sexual advance.

Tom Cruise, another A-lister, will very certainly not be there either. Because of the scandal surrounding the HFPA in 2021, he returned his three Golden Globes.

Although he did not receive a best actor nomination, Top Gun: Maverick, one of the year’s most successful films, was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Dramatic Picture category.

Her Avengers co-star Mark Ruffalo wrote last year that the HFPA’s reforms were “discouraging.” At the same time, Scarlett Johansson has previously urged her peers in the film business to “pull back” from the organization.

On Tuesday, however, the official Globes account tweeted that Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Selena Gomez, MJ Rodriguez, Jennifer Coolidge, Jenna Ortega, and Rihanna would all be in attendance.

New host.

The Golden Globes had been one of the most-watched award shows in the world before the recent scandal. The event was entertaining since the presenter was typically a mastermind.

In contrast to the more traditional Oscars, the Golden Globes typically have a more irreverent host like Ricky Gervais, Seth Myers, or the duo of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

U.S. comedian Jerrod Carmichael will serve as host this time around. Although Carmichael isn’t exactly a household name in the UK, he’s pretty famous in the US for his stand-up routines.

His special stand-up Rothaniel earned him an Emmy in 2022, and he was also nominated for a trophy that year for hosting Saturday Night Live.

Taking place in early January, after a relaxing Christmas break, and with plenty of free alcohol, most celebrities typically put on an excellent show at the Globes.

According to an interview Gervais gave to the Telegraph earlier this week, “it was always considered the most enjoyable [of the awards] to be there.” “Tables piled high with complimentary alcohol” “while other rewards are theatre seats and bone dry.” Of all, the audience’s best interest doesn’t always coincide with the best interest of the performer. It takes more effort to hold the attention of a drunk audience. I discovered they listened when I threatened to tell them something terrible about themselves.

Who is being put forward this year?

With eight nominations, the Golden Globes go to the dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.

At number six is Michelle Yeoh’s ingenious multiverse comedy-drama Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Five films nominated for an Academy Award: Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical The Fabelmans and Damien Chazelle’s reflection on 1920s Hollywood, Babylon.

Three are featured in the films based on Elvis Presley (directed by Baz Luhrmann), Pinocchio (directed by Guillermo del Toro), and Tár (directed by Todd Field and featuring Cate Blanchett as a disgraced conductor), respectively.

Abbott Elementary, a comedy set in a public elementary school, tops the television field with five nods, followed by The Crown with four, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story with three, Only Murders in the Building with two, Pam & Tommy with one, and The White Lotus with two.

What’s the big deal about the Golden Globes?

The Golden Globes are not necessarily predictive of Oscar success, but a win there may certainly help propel a film or actor to the next level.

The fact that the Globes are shown on television plays a huge role. The vast majority of Academy voters will be tuning in to the Globes so that a well-received speech can put them on their radar.

When it comes to discovering and rewarding emerging talent, the Golden Globes excel. Several rising performers, like Rachel Zegler, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ariana DeBose, Emma Corrin, Richard Madden, Awkwafina, and Taron Egerton, have taken home hardware during their early stages of success.

Some of the younger nominees this year are Austin Butler, Diego Calva, and Barry Keoghan. Cate Blanchett, Olivia Colman, and Daniel Craig are just a few of the Hollywood heavy hitters up for awards this year.
